Herbert Royle was a landscape painter in oils and watercolours, born in Manchester, he studied in Buxton with J. Buxton Knight. He painted mainly in Yorkshire but also painted in Wales , London and Dorset. Exhibited at the RA from 1893, RSA, NEAC, ROI and GI and abroad. He was a member of he Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Liverpool Academy of Art and Sandon Studios Society.
His subject matter was usually farming and its setting. He caught the light of his surroundings very well with vigorous brush strokes and gentle colours.
