View on the Italian Lakes by Joseph Walter West. Oil on panel, signed with monogram, 9 1/2ins x 14ins (14 1/2 ins x 19ins)
A rare artist, who worked in oils, exhibited occasionally, but had a talent for painting a beautiful canvas. It is known that he painted in Italy , I have two works by him of Italy and visited Venice , the only other painting I have seen by him , was of Venice, it sold at Sothebys in 1981!
This particular work has an interesting composition, the winding lane, fresh blossoms with a sunlit lake as a background. There are very strong Sargent influences in West's work that almost give an American post impressionist feel to it. The light on the wall or lake and the swirling trees are beautifully captured with delicate applications of paint and are certainly not laboured in execution.
West always signed with a monogram , which is a swirling weather vane, with the letters WEST.
