Oil on canvas, circa 1948, 15ins x 28ins ,
From the artist's studio, with studio stamp signed by John and Molly Hitchens.
Painted in the artist's garden at Greenleaves near Petworth, "Wild Peonies" is a cross between his landscapes and still Lifes.
There is no focal point or depth, only the varying tones of green ,grey and pink. He is looking at a bank of flowers and grasses, as a Victorian painter like William Henry Hunt would and bought it into modern times. There is no Ruskinian attention to detail and texture just colour and form. So simple and so beautiful.
