A talented painter who was in France with RP Bonington and a friend of TS Boys. So he was right in the middle of the British watercolour colony in France in the early years of the 19th Century. His work is close to Bonington's in execution, he however was more interested in architecture , but used his skills as an artist in his architectural work. He continued to paint throughout his life. His work is sometimes confused with Bonington and Boys work.
In later life, during the mid-1840s, Poynter became Professor of Fine Arts at King's College London. From 1845–8, he was an inspector of the design schools. However he was sometimes criticised for his often contradictory reports. He also served as secretary of the Institute of British Architects in 1840, 1841, and 1844, and also as its vice-president.
In 1858, Poynter developed an eye affection leading to total blindness. Because of this some of his commissions were taken over by William Burges. Poynter died at his home in 3 Marine Place, Dover on 20 November 1886 and was reportedly buried in Kensal Green, London.
