View near Spolatra, now Split, Dalmation Coast, Croatia
watercolour over pencil, inscribed and dated 1856, inscribed on reverse with location.10 1/4ins x 16 1/4ins
Lear visited Split in 1856, the coastline in this drawing is very delicately executed with a beautiful line for the shoreline which extends into the distance, below the pale blue hills. The blue azure sea is exactly the colour of water in that beautiful region of the Adriatic.
There are not many watercolours or drawings by Lear of this area, he did a few watercolours of Ragusa , now Dubrovnik.
