watercolour, signed inscribed and inscibed on reverse with location and date 1843. 14 1/2ins x 20ins
Callow visited Scotland in 1843 , travelling to Edinburgh on September 12th. This is a view from Leith Harbour across the water towards Edinburgh, sketched in pencil overlayed with watercolour,
I believe this watercolour was painted on the spot . There is very little pencil line under the colour ,all the shapes and forms are created with washes .
The distant hills and church spires of Edinburgh are beautifully caught through a light haze , while the harbour walls and buildings of Leith are finely detailed.
