watercolour, heightened with bodycolour, 3 1/2ins x 6ins Clarkson Stanfield was originally a scenery painter in Edinburgh and London. In 1834 he took up painting full time and was elected RA in 1835! He visited Italy,France,Switzerland and Holland. Although principally an oil painter, he worked regularly in watercolours. Ruskin discribed him as ' the leader of the English Realists'.
