Clarkson Stanfield was originally a scenery painter in Edinburgh and London. In 1834 he took up painting full time and was elected RA in 1835! He visited Italy,France,Switzerland and Holland. Although principally an oil painter, he worked regularly in watercolours.
Ruskin described him as ' the Leader of the English Realists'.
